5 Locations I Love to Photograph in Port Huron
I love my hometown! The access to the beautiful blue water is unmatched on the Great Lakes and I would put a summer day here up against most in the state and Great Lakes region.
Having been a photographer here for over a decade now (wow I think I just gave myself a few more grey hairs by saying that!) I’ve found some great spots that match my style of photography and creativity.
Some of these spots you may have seen or heard of before or seem obvious - of course the beach is a pretty spot! - but hopefully this gives you a head start on finding the perfect spots to take your own photos!
Duffy’s Studio - The corner of Wall Street & 4th Street
A quintessential Port Huron photo spot. If you know a high school senior, have lived here longer than a year, you’ve seen someone with their photo taken here. It's cliche, but its cliche for a reason. It’s a fantastic spot. Framing a subject in the ivy covered door frame results in a pleasing of the eye photograph. Shooting at this spot in the afternoon/evening results in light coming from the west which comes from over the shoulder of the subject behind the buildings and creates beautiful images. Side note: It’s a private building, always be respectful of the area and the owner when taking photographs here!
2. The Beach
Take advantage of what makes this area so beautiful and make your way to the beach for some romantic photos. There are public access beaches at the lighthouse, Lakeside beach and all the way up to Fort Gratiot Township Park, all have aspects that make them unique and perfect for photos. I like to take photos here right at the end of a session when shooting in the evening to take advantage of that low light that creates a beautiful soft look. Another time to shoot is at sunrise which can create fun flares behind subjects.
3. The Riverwalk
A relatively new spot to the area, the Blue Water Riverwalk is right in the heart of downtown Port Huron and allows for access to the water and beautiful lighting in the evening. Head down to the Maritime Center and head south and you’ll find plenty of nature areas as well as unique man made features like an old ferry dock!
4. City Flats Hotel & Ballroom
City Flats is a beautiful location for a wedding located right on the Black River in the heart of downtown Port Huron. Two things that make this spot so great: Beautiful light in the afternoon/evening and covered areas that allow for outside photos even in the rain!
5. Ladies of the Maccabees Building
This building delivers on my desire for romantic classical architecture. In the evenings when the light pours through the Corinthian columns it creates a dreamy look that I’m always into shooting.
